The Green Party of Québec (Parti Vert du Québec) has overwhelmingly rejected a merger with the left-wing Québec solidaire.
The decision was made via a members’ vote at the Green Party of Québec’s annual general meeting on Saturday, after an offer several months earlier by Quebec solidaire to join forces.
Québec solidaire itself is the product of an earlier merger between the l’Union des forces progressistes (UFP) and d’Option citoyenne.
Green Party of Québec members argued that a merger with the Québec solidaire would water down the party.
The Greens also elected Scott McKay, a former Montreal city councillor, as the new party leader.
